Weight, Exercise, and Sperm Quality
Body weight and physical activity are two of the more heavily studied lifestyle factors in sperm quality research, and the data on both is more specific than “stay fit” advice usually captures.
What Higher Body Weight Is Linked To
A 2024 meta-analysis pooling data from over 71,000 men across 50 studies found that men with obesity had measurably lower total sperm count, total motility, progressive motility, and normal morphology compared to men with a BMI under 25, with the effect more pronounced at higher obesity classes.1 Even the overweight category (BMI 25-29.9), not just obesity, showed a measurable reduction in progressive motility compared to the normal-weight range.
What Moderate Exercise Is Linked To
On the other side, a study following 261 previously sedentary men through a 24-week moderate exercise program - about 30 minutes on a treadmill, three to four times a week - found meaningful improvements across the board: sperm concentration, motility, total count, and morphology all improved compared to a non-exercising control group.2 One detail worth noting: those benefits started fading within about a week of stopping the program, which suggests consistency matters more than any single workout.
What’s Still Unclear
The research on very high-intensity or endurance-level training is less settled - some evidence suggests a point of diminishing returns at extreme training volumes, but that evidence base is thinner and less consistent than the moderate-exercise findings above. The clearest, best-supported takeaway from current research is that moderate, consistent activity is linked to better outcomes than a sedentary lifestyle, not that more is always better.
