The Sperm Count Decline Debate, Explained
“Sperm counts are dropping” is one of the most repeated headlines in men’s health - but the underlying research is more contested than the headlines suggest. Two large, credible studies reach different conclusions, and the real picture is more nuanced (and more specific to motility) than either headline captures on its own.
The “Counts Are Crashing” Study
A large meta-regression published in Human Reproduction Update in November 2022 pooled data from 53 countries and found sperm counts declining by more than 1% per year, adding up to over a 50% drop over roughly the past five decades - with the decline accelerating after 2000.1 It’s the most widely cited evidence behind the “global sperm crisis” narrative.
The Study That Pushes Back
A 2024 study published in Human Reproduction told a different story. Researchers analyzed samples from 6,758 men at a Danish sperm bank between 2017 and 2022 and found sperm concentration had not significantly changed over that period.2 The researchers concluded there’s no clear evidence of an ongoing, universal decline in sperm counts, at least in this large, consistent dataset.
Where the Two Studies Actually Agree
Here’s the detail that gets lost in the headlines: the same 2024 study found something notable when it looked specifically at 2019-2022. Sperm concentration dropped 16% and total motile sperm count dropped 22% in that narrower window, even though the longer 2017-2022 trend looked flat.2 The researchers speculated the timing lines up with the COVID-19 pandemic period, possibly tied to changes in work patterns, diet, and physical activity rather than a direct viral effect.
Why This Matters More for Motility Than for Count
Taken together, the research suggests the “sperm counts are crashing” framing oversimplifies what’s actually going on. Concentration looks more stable over the long run than the alarmist version of the story suggests - but motility, specifically, shows a real and fairly recent dip tied to a disruptive period in daily routines.
