Microplastics and Sperm Quality

Microplastics show up almost everywhere researchers look for them these days, including, it turns out, in human reproductive tissue. The research splits cleanly into two categories: what’s been directly detected, and what that detection is actually linked to - and the two get blurred together more often than they should.

What’s Actually Been Found

A study analyzing testicular tissue from a small group of men found microplastic particles in 100% of the samples, averaging around two particles per sample.1 Separately, a 2024 study across three cities in China analyzed semen from 113 men and detected eight different types of microplastics, with one type, PTFE, showing up in just over half of participants.2 These are detection studies: they establish that microplastics are present in reproductive tissue, not that they’re causing any specific outcome on their own.

What That Presence Is Associated With

The China study went a step further and looked for correlations. Men with higher PTFE exposure had a meaningfully higher likelihood of lower sperm concentration, and total sperm count and motility were both lower in men with higher overall microplastic exposure.2 The researchers were careful to describe this as an association, not a proven cause-and-effect relationship - the kind of exposure that correlates with lower sperm quality often correlates with other lifestyle and environmental factors too.

Where the Public Conversation Gets Ahead of the Research

A widely watched 2026 documentary on plastic exposure drew criticism from researchers and industry scientists for overstating how directly plastics exposure improved fertility outcomes in its subjects, several of whom made multiple lifestyle changes at once, not just reducing plastic use, making it hard to isolate what actually drove any change.3 It’s a useful reminder that “microplastics are present” and “microplastics caused this” are two different claims, and the research so far supports the first one far more strongly than the second.

What This Means Day to Day

None of this points to a single fix, and there isn’t one lifestyle change proven to reverse microplastic exposure’s effects on sperm quality specifically.
